Improve Your Website in 5 Steps: Titles, Descriptions, and Headers

There are many ways to improve your website, here are a few SEO tips on your Title, Description, and Keyword tags.

Start with the Title

Browser Title

Your title is one of the first things a search engine as well as a visitor will see. Anytime someone searches, the search engine will show your page’s title as the bold link to follow.  A clear and relevant title helps searchers decide which link to click on.  In addition, the title tag is still a main element considered by search engines to determine your pages’ rank for your targeted keywords.

There are a few things to keep in mind with your Title Tag.

  • Make sure that you use a different title on every page of your website. Search engine do not like cookie cutter titles.
  • Also make sure that each title relates to the content on that page. If your title says “Widgets for Sale” but the word widgets is nowhere to be found on the page itself, search engines will not rank you for “widgets”.
  • Use keywords that you want to target. In particular, you should have in mind 3-5 keywords and phrases that you are trying to optimize for on each page, and be sure you use each of those in your title.
  • Position important keywords at the beginning of your title.
  • Try to keep you title length below 65 characters, including spaces.

Describe Your Page

The Description Attribute Tag is used to “describe” your web page to the search engine and the searcher. Say you do a search for “how to improve your website”, well search engines will look for these keywords on your page and in your Title Tag and use them in your search results. If any of these keywords are in your description, the search engines will bold and use a snippet of this text in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page).

Page ranking varies from search engines who use or don’t use the Description Tag when determining rank. It is still a good practice to use keywords that you are trying to rank for in the Description Tag as well as in the content of your page. Try to keep your Description Tag down to around 155 characters in length.

Is the Keyword Attribute Tag worth it?

Not really, but why not use it, it doesn’t hurt.

Most search engines banned the Keyword Attribute Tag a while back due to people spamming and stuffing keywords into this Attribute. Though some search engines and other third party applications still use the Keyword Attribute Tag. When using this tag only use keywords that you will find throughout the content on the particular page.  As with Title Tags and Description Tags, try to keep them unique.

Final Thoughts

Use these Attribute Tags, and make them different for every page. Spend time on them, but spend more time writing interesting, relevant, and unique content for your pages.  At the end of the day, page content will carry more weight with the search engines than your Title, Description, and Keyword tags.
