SEO Matters: What it is and Why You Can’t Ignore It.

For many business owners, your business’s Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, might as well be your annoying younger sibling. It’s always bothering you and you’d rather ignore it than try to understand what it’s talking about.

However, ignoring your SEO is NOT the right decision. No matter how hard you try to pretend it doesn’t exist, SEO makes a huge difference in driving potential customers to your website.

Simferopol, Russia - July 13 2014: Google biggest Internet search engine. Google.com domain was registered September 15, 1997.

So for those of you who don’t understand it, don’t think it’s important, or do understand it and are looking to improve your rankings, here is our run down of SEO: What it is and Why you can’t ignore it.

Definition
According to the online business dictionary, Search Engine Optimization is “the process of improving traffic to a given website by increasing the site’s visibility in search engine results.” In layman’s terms that means SEO is what helps more people find your website on the internet.

How it Works
To determine what websites show up in search results, Google uses a complicated algorithm to analyze all aspects of a website. Some of the most important factors that Google looks at include backlinks, topically-relevant content, popularity, engagement, mobile accessibility, page usability, HTTPS, keyword optimization, and many more. The fun part is, no one actually knows exactly how Google’s algorithm calculates all the data. However, based off some of the most recent research studies, the most important factors are page popularity, backlinks (both domain and page-level), page speed, mobile accessibility, content, and keywords.

Why You Can’t Ignore It
To put it simply, all the different elements on your website will play an important role in how your website appears in search engine results on Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. Most business owners want to appear as high in the search results as possible because there’s a good chance more people will see your link, click it, and visit your website. Even if you are one of the best businesses in your industry, ignoring your SEO can easily result in your webpage getting lost in the clutter of the Internet and you’ll be missing out on new business and potential customers.

SEO is not something that you can check once every month and expect to see results. In order to truly improve your rankings and website traffic, you will likely need to hire an expert or consultant to help you out. While you can probably improve the content of your website by utilizing some SEO Best Practices, hiring an SEO and website specialist will help you improve the other factors such as loading time or increasing quality links. SEO specialists can also set up Pay-Per-Click accounts for you using Google Adwords or Bing Ads, which can significantly improve your website traffic.

Even if the majority of this article sounded like gibberish to you, the most important thing is that you recognize that SEO matters. The good news is that there are plenty of experts ready and willing to help you improve your rankings.
